How can your eyes let you down at an interview? We have all heard of body language, and how it would be interpreted as an indicator of our feelings and personality. According to NLP practitioners (of which there are more than you think), our eyes can indeed tell a lot about us, particularly when being questioned about our past experiences. You see it is not just our answers to the questions which enlightens the interviewer, but our whole demeanour when answering each question. There will be few instances in this day and age where you are not met at an interview by someone who has at least some basic knowledge on reading body language. In most cases you should not let that worry you, however I believe that knowledge is a good thing, so if you know what the interviewer observes as part of and in addition to your answers, you know how NOT to react when a question is a little tricky to answer. Initiative, use it from the start.
Employers, when advertising an opening, normally put together a job specification or job description. In this document a potential candidate will discover the basics of what the employer is looking for from people applying to fill the position. Some of the requirements listed are “black and white” such as educational qualifications or specific industry knowledge. Other requirements however are not as easy to either identify in yourself, or even more difficult to demonstrate during the selection process. Employers are more and more listing key behaviours and competencies as requirements for the roles advertised. Demonstrating these behaviours and competencies during a face to face interview can prove difficult, especially if you feel that sufficient opportunity to do so has not been given during the interview.
